VOORWOORD FESTIVAL 2018

20 Years! It is difficult to imagine that so many years went by since the first edition of the Muziekfestival. I remember the first concert of the BELCANTO STRINGS in Middelburg. Daniel Raiskin, the Viola player of our String Trio, was as  inspired by Middelburg‘s atmosphere, as Wolfgang Schröder and I were. Through the good experiences of the festival in Hopfgarten/Tirol, which I created in 1995 Daniel decided to give birth  to a similar idea in Middelburg. The members of the Stichting Kamermuziek Zeeland were open to his suggestion and in 1999 a new musical child was born.  In the following years many fantastic musicians have played for the zeeuwse publiek. To  name all of them would be too long, to mention few names seems to be unfair towards all the other great artists.

After 10 years Daniel Raiskin  decided to stop playing viola and to dedicate himself to his conducting career. The artistic leadership of a Kamermuziek-Festival became for him obsolete, Daniel and the board decided to give the leadership to Bart Schneemann. Bart  created a completely different kind of programmes, which were in my opinion very exciting.

However, 2 years later, it was the 4th of January 2011, I recevied a phone call from Middelburg – the suggestion was to take over the artistic leadership of the festival. My immediate thought was – what a fantastic beginning of the year! And because of the unique spirit of the festival in Middelburg, which I experienced  several years as a guest, I didn‘t even need 10 seconds to consider. My answer was an immediate YESSSSS!

The following years had again several musical highlights, the earliest music came from the 17th century, the path went through 400 years to very new pieces, like L. Gurvitch‘s  Anne-Frank Suite, which will be performed now for the first time in NL. My idea of a good festival programme is to offer compilations of pieces and ensembles in each concert which one almost never will hear in a „normal“ concert series, performed by Dutch artists and artists from abroad. Even in our times of Youtube, Itunes, Spotify etc. artists from almost each country have something special, which you won‘t find necessarily in other countries. So, these kind of international encounters enriche the artists and these new energies create new experiences for the audience.

In these 20 years there were several difficulties to overcome, there were years in which one couldn‘t be sure that the festival would continue. But the unique positive spirit of the board has mastered all the storms and we are glad to be able to continue to spread the music of some of the greatest spirits, like Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Shostakovitch etc., who lived in our exciting world.

I want to thank former members of the board, like Fred Godthelp, Johannes Jacobs, Brenda & Ronald du Long, Kees Cijsouw and  Annie Vaandrager, as well as the present ones for their invaluable love and dedication to the music and the musicians. My big thanks also to my fantastic colleagues and musical friends, who give us every year their passion and love for the music. And, last but not least, I want to express my thanks to the traditional and new friends of the festival in the audience. That triumvirate creates what we want – a true FESTIVAL.

Hartelijk welkom op de 20e editie van het Muziekfestival Middelburg!

Yours
